DAY TRIP 3: APOKORONAS I’

Today we set off to discover the traditional heart of Crete in the beautiful Apokoronas district, located east of Chania on the island of Crete.

09.15 ARRIVAL AT APTERA RUINS & KOULE FORTRESS

We arrive at the impressive archaeological site of Ancient Aptera, one of the most important ancient cities in western Crete. Situated on a hilltop with breathtaking panoramic views over Souda Bay and the surrounding mountains, Aptera flourished from Minoan times through the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

As we walk through the ruins, you will see the remains of Roman cisterns, baths, a small theater, and sections of ancient fortifications. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into daily life thousands of years ago, when Aptera was a powerful city-state known for its trade and strategic position.

Just nearby stands the impressive Koules Fortress of Aptera, often referred to simply as the Koule Fortress. Built during the Ottoman period in the 19th century, this stronghold was constructed to control the strategic entrance of Souda Bay.

Its massive stone walls and commanding location highlight the military importance of this area throughout history. From here, you can admire spectacular views across the bay — a reminder of why so many civilizations sought to control this key coastal point.

11.00 ARRIVAL AT LOCAL SQUARE CAFÉ AT VILLAGE ARMENI

Shaded by large plane trees and surrounded by traditional stone houses, Armeni Square offers a true glimpse into everyday Cretan life. Here, we stop at a cozy local café where villagers gather to socialize, relax, and enjoy their daily coffee.

We arrive at Platanaki, a peaceful natural spot nestled in the lush landscape of the Apokoronas district on the island of Crete.

Here begins our short and refreshing walk along the banks of the beautiful Kiliaris River, one of the few rivers in Crete that flows year-round. Surrounded by plane trees, reeds, and vibrant greenery, this area offers a completely different side of the island — cool, shaded, and full of natural life.

The gentle hike is easy and enjoyable, suitable for all fitness levels. As we walk, you can listen to the soothing sound of flowing water and observe the rich vegetation that thrives in this fertile region. The fresh air and tranquil setting provide the perfect opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate Crete’s diverse landscapes beyond its beaches.

13.15 DEPARTURE

13.30 ARRIVAL AT KALIVES COASTAL VILLAGE FOR LUNCH/SWIMMING

We arrive at the beautiful seaside village of Kalyves, located along the shores of Souda Bay in the Apokoronas district of Crete.

Kalyves is a charming coastal destination known for its sandy beach, calm shallow waters, and relaxed local atmosphere. As we reach the waterfront, you’ll immediately notice the inviting sea and the traditional tavernas lining the shore.

Here, you will have free time to enjoy lunch at one of the seaside restaurants. Fresh fish, grilled meats, seasonal vegetables, and classic Cretan dishes prepared with local olive oil make this a delightful culinary stop. Dining by the sea, with views of the bay and gentle waves nearby, creates a truly enjoyable experience.

During the drive, you can sit back and enjoy the scenic countryside one last time — olive groves, rolling hills, and glimpses of the sea accompanying us along the way. It’s the perfect moment to reflect on the day’s highlights, from cultural discoveries to moments of relaxation by the water.

We arrive back at the hotel in the late afternoon, carrying with us wonderful memories of authentic Crete and the warm hospitality of its people.
