Our excursion begins with a visit to one of Crete’s most remarkable natural treasures, the ancient OLIVE TREE, which is believed to be between 2,000 and 4,000 years old, making it one of the oldest living olive trees in the world.

As we arrive, you’ll immediately notice the tree’s massive, twisted trunk — sculpted by time into dramatic curves and hollowed shapes. Despite its ancient age, the tree still produces olives today, a powerful symbol of endurance and continuity. In fact, olive branches from this very tree have been used to create victory wreaths for the Olympic Games.

11.15 ARRIVAL AT ELAFONISI PINK BEACH

Our journey continues to one of Crete’s most breathtaking coastal gems!

Famous for its soft pink-tinged sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, Elafonissi feels like a tropical paradise in the Mediterranean. The pink hue comes from crushed seashells mixed with white sand, creating a unique and photogenic shoreline that changes subtly with the light and tides.

One of the most special features of Elafonissi, is its shallow lagoon. You can easily walk through the warm, knee-deep water to reach the small islet just offshore — a fun and safe experience for visitors of all ages. The area is also part of a protected nature reserve, home to rare plants and nesting sea turtles, so its natural beauty remains largely untouched.

Our journey continues with a flavorful and authentic Cretan experience at Pnevmatikakis Winery, located near Kissamos in the Chania region of Crete.

Founded in 1997, this family-owned winery beautifully blends tradition with modern winemaking techniques. Surrounded by sun-drenched vineyards, Pnevmatikakis Winery produces a variety of high-quality wines made from both indigenous Cretan grape varieties and international grapes.

During our visit, you’ll be guided through the winery facilities, where you’ll learn about the winemaking process — from harvesting the grapes to fermentation and aging. You’ll discover local varieties such as Vidiano and Vilana (white wines), as well as Kotsifali and Mandilari (red wines), which are deeply rooted in Cretan viticulture.

The highlight of the stop is, of course, the wine tasting. You’ll have the opportunity to sample several wines, each paired with insights about its flavor profile, aroma, and ideal food pairings. Our excursion continues to the charming coastal village of Kolymbari, a peaceful seaside destination west of Chania that offers an authentic and relaxing Cretan atmosphere.

Kolymbari is known for its quiet pebble beach, crystal-clear waters, and traditional fishing harbor. Unlike the busier tourist spots, this village retains its local character, making it the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of Crete.

Here, you’ll have time to enjoy lunch at one of the lovely seaside tavernas. Fresh seafood is the highlight — grilled fish, calamari, octopus, and classic Cretan dishes prepared with locally produced olive oil. Sitting by the water, with the gentle sea breeze and the sound of waves nearby, creates a truly memorable dining experience.

If you prefer, you can take a refreshing swim in the calm waters or simply relax on the beach and soak up the Mediterranean sun. The laid-back atmosphere makes it an ideal stop to unwind before continuing the journey.

After experiencing the ancient history of the Ancient Olive Tree of Vouves, the exotic beauty of Elafonissi Beach, the rich flavors at Pnevmatikakis Winery, and the relaxing seaside charm of Kolymbari, we return with wonderful memories of western Crete.

During the drive back, you can sit back, relax, and reflect on the highlights of the day — from breathtaking landscapes and cultural traditions to delicious local tastes and refreshing swims in the Libyan Sea. The scenic Cretan countryside accompanies us along the way, offering one last glimpse of its majesty.
