Kotsifos Gorge is a stunning natural passage in southern Crete, located in the Rethymno Regional Unit between the villages of Kanevos and Sellia, near the seaside town of Plakias.
Kotsifos Gorge stretches for about 3 kilometers and is known for its dramatic rocky cliffs that rise steeply on both sides of the narrow road running through it. The limestone walls create a wild and rugged atmosphere, especially impressive as you drive or walk through the tightest sections of the gorge.
Unlike some of Crete’s wetter gorges, Kotsifos is generally dry, giving it a raw, rocky beauty. Small caves and formations can be seen in the cliffs, and the area is home to native plants and birds of prey.
One of the most unique features of the gorge is the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos, built directly into the rock face. This tiny white church adds a peaceful and spiritual touch to the dramatic surroundings and is a popular stop for visit. Kotsifos Gorge offers:
* Impressive cliff formations
* A scenic driving experience
* Quiet natural beauty
* A mix of nature and tradition
